Mary Livingstone was an awe inspiring woman, embodying the spirit of exploration, family and bravery – which is at the heart of everything we do on our own expedition and you can support us by sponsoring our green boat which we have named in her honour.

Why Sponsor?

We would like to invite you to join us in our campaign to make this “Mary’s turn”. In Chapunga we will be building a well for a local community. As this is such a remote area and difficult terrain the well will cost at least £10,000. Please join us on this journey as I’ll be sharing moments from Mary’s life that have made such an impact on me.

Why Mary Livingstone?

We’re off on our fourth and final rowing expedition down the Zambezi River next month. We have almost been shadowing the life and footsteps of the famous explorer Dr David Livingstone!

As we approach the Indian Ocean we’ll be passing through Chupunga where his wife Mary died and is buried. I wondered what Mary was like and decided to read up about her. It seems that history has not been particularly kind or interested in her. She’s been characterised by passivity, living in her husband’s shadow and beset by bouts of depression and poor health. She seemed little more than a melancholy footnote to her husband’s story.

As I read more about her, I went from mild interest to a sense of awe at the life of this extraordinary person. Here was a woman born and brought up under African skies, deeply loved and in love with her husband David. She joined him on expeditions through the Kalahari and down the Zambezi, suffering all of the physical hardships of those endeavours. And who raised 5 children, alone and poor, and in a damp, cold and unfamiliar Britain whilst her husband was far away and out of all contact.

She seemed to me to embody that spirit of exploration, family and bravery that we want to be at the heart of everything that we do on our own expedition, RowZambique. So, in honour of this extraordinary woman, we’ve named one of our three boats after her, the green boat, the boat we all love so much. And when we get to Chupunga we’ll be holding a service in her memory, planting a mango tree and building a well for the local community there.
